If you’ve been part of the Start Me Up Niagara community for any length of time, you already know that employment is a cornerstone of how we support people in building more stable, self‑directed lives. What we’d love to do here is take a moment to share a bit more about what our Employment Services team has been working on behind the scenes—and the impact that support continues to make.
Our Employment Services are rooted in the same values that guide everything we do: meeting people where they are, walking alongside them at their own pace, and recognizing that employment readiness looks different for everyone. The people who walk through our doors are navigating real and often complex barriers—whether that’s long‑term unemployment, poverty, disability, mental health challenges, or gaps in recent work history. Our role is not to rush that process, but to support it thoughtfully and realistically.
Through one‑on‑one coaching, individualized employment planning, résumé and cover letter support, interview preparation, and ongoing job search assistance, our team works closely with participants to help them move toward work that fits their goals and circumstances. Just as importantly, we stay connected once employment is secured, offering follow‑up support that helps people maintain and grow in their roles.
The Impact
This past year, our Employment Services supported 185 participants in taking concrete steps toward employment. Of those participants, 56 successfully secured jobs, marking a meaningful shift toward financial stability, independence, and renewed confidence.
Behind every one of those numbers is a story—someone rebuilding routine, reconnecting with purpose, or realizing they are capable of more than they believed possible. Employment is often a key turning point, and for many participants, it is one part of a much larger journey toward stability. Our ability to connect employment support with other Start Me Up Niagara services—like food access, clothing, transportation, and community connection—makes those outcomes stronger and more sustainable.
A Community‑Recognized Effort
We’re also incredibly proud that this work has been recognized beyond our walls. Our Work Action Centre was named Best Employment Agency in the St. Catharines Standard Readers’ Choice Awards for two years in a row—a reminder that the care, expertise, and commitment of our Employment Services team is seen and valued by the wider community.
Looking Ahead
As always, there is more to do. The need for compassionate, barrier‑aware employment support in Niagara continues to grow, and we remain committed to adapting, learning, and expanding our reach. None of this is possible without the supporters, partners, and community members who believe in the value of this work.
