Get your bike chains oiled and prepare to strap on your helmets — or running shoes — for the Glow Ride in support of Bike Me Up Niagara.
Touted as the brightest event this year, the family-friendly cycling and walking event with Niagara Glow Walkers is on July 3, 2025.
Started in 2019, on the first anniversary of Bike Me Up Niagara, residents of St. Catharines’ Queenston neighbourhood came out to support the program operated under the Start Me Up Niagara umbrella, and which has only grown over the years.
Organizers hope next month to raise $5,000 for programs offering refurbished bicycles and $60 basic tune-ups, both steeply discounted compared to other area bicycle shops.
“Every pedal and every step makes a difference, by joining the Glow Ride or Glow Walk, you’re helping Bike Me Up Niagara continue to refurbish, and repair donated bicycles, making them available at low cost to individuals and families with limited incomes,” Emily Fieguth, fundraising co-ordinator, told the Standard in an email.
“For many, having a bike means access to employment, school, appointments, and essential services. A simple, reliable form of transportation that opens doors.”
Fieguth said teams are welcome to participate in the fundraiser.
“Then share your registration link with friends, family and co-workers. Together, we can light up Niagara and help change lives — one ride at a time.”
The hour-long Thursday event will start and finish at Russell Avenue Community Centre, beginning at 8 p.m. People are encouraged to illuminate their bicycles and wear bright neon colours in the spirit of the evening.
Pre-ride activities, between 6 and 7:30 p.m., will include a mini bike rodeo, informational sessions offered by CAA Niagara and 529Garage, Niagara River Lions player will sign autographs and shoot hoops, and music will be provided by Mike DJ courtesy of Robot Ears Radio.
